Champagne Reception

4/19/2008 6:00pm - 9:00pm

The artwork of acclaimed Surrealist Joan Miró is the focus of an exhibition at Weinstein Gallery from April 18th, 2008 through May 18th, 2008, which includes nearly 80 original prints by the artist, as well sculpture and unique works, from 1936-1979.

The work of Joan Miró is unmistakable. An artist from an early age, Miró developed a strong visual language that initially caught the eye of Surrealism’s poet-founder André Breton in the 1920’s, and subsequently captured him a place amidst the artistic giants of the fine art canon. The Museum of Modern Art, New York, acquired its first Miró in 1936 and gave him his first solo museum show in 1941.

Among the prints that Weinstein Gallery is showcasing is a group of carborundum aquatints that were included in the important exhibition Joan Miró: Fifty Recent Prints that took place at MoMA in 1970. A consummate craftsman, Miró mastered a variety of mediums and created his first print in 1933. But in the mid-1960s, in anticipation of his 75th birthday Miró began working in the revelatory medium of carborundum, which allowed him to create texture and volume in his prints. Miró’s dedication to printmaking was no accident. He believed it gave him access to a wider audience and he always strove to make his print-work resonate as forcefully as his paintings. As the 1970 MoMa catalog stated, “…his often expressed wish to make prints with ‘…the dignity of a handsome painting’ is fulfilled in the prodigious Equinox.” Perhaps his most iconic and sought after work, Equinox is included in Weinstein Gallery’s exhibition.

Weinstein’s exhibition also includes several unique works by the artist including one pastel from 1937, made during the artist’s Surrealist period, a bronze sculpture, and an Untitled gouache and mixed media piece that was the genesis of a well-known lithograph. The exhibition will be on view at Weinstein Gallery, 301 Geary Street, San Francisco, CA 94102 (415) 362-8151, from April 18th-May18th, 2008.
