We are pleased to announce the next show, Friends of Painting, a two person show with Jon Clary and Bruce Wilhelm. This will be the first time both artists have shown with the gallery and we are excited to exhibit their wonderfully vibrant and beautiful work. The show includes mostly paintings as well as a few stop animation films and painting sculptures by Bruce Wilhelm. The two met while in college in Richmond, Virginia. The show celebrates their love of painting, i.e., Friends of painting, as well as the bonds created between fellow artists and their passion for a common occupation.

The work of Bruce Wilhelm features three dimensional paintings which traverse any single reality or dimension while juxtaposing colonial scenes of race horses, dog hunts, and abstract, variegated slices of other worlds.
The characters within the paintings are unaware of these superimposed abstractions - yet the layering allows the viewer to experience the different time periods as well as painting techniques simultaneously. Complementing this series of paintings are his stop animation films which share the same playful appropriations of old master painting scenes and fleeting fragments of other worlds. This will be Bruce's first exhibition in San Francisco.

Jon Clary's paintings share a similar nonsensical absurdism while taking the viewer to places of mystery and wonder - a library without walls in the forest, an arctic landscape making it's reflection upon a modern building. The images in the paintings summon feelings similar to waking up from a wondrous dream in disbelief and curiousity; rather than try to make sense of it's absurdity, it's best to simply revel in your own stupefaction.

The opening will be Saturday , June 20th, from 7 - 10 pm, with a good possibilty of live music as well. The show runs until August 1st. Gallery hours are Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 1-5 pm and also by appointment. We hope to see you there!
