Ping Pong Gallery is pleased to announce that it is exactly where it needs to be...presenting its first solo exhibition with Susan O'Malley. " ...I think I am supposed to do this. Even before the YES WE CAN posters hung in every window in San Francisco, I have loved and collected inspirational sayings. I adore the crisp and authoritative language of optimism, the Zen-like messages of just being. Why wouldn't I hang a roomful of inspirational posters in a gallery for others to experience?" As a Bay Area artist and curator, O’Malley uses simple and recognizable tools of engagement—offering a Pep Talk, distributing flyers in a neighborhood's mailbox, hanging inspirational posters—to offer entry into an understood, and sometimes humorous, interaction of everyday life.
As both an artist and curator, she has participated in programs and exhibitions at Bay Area venues including Southern Exposure, The Hardware Store Gallery, California College of the Arts, Mission 17, The Curiosity Shoppe, The Lab, Ping Pong Gallery, The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art and The Headlands Center for the Arts. Curatorial projects at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, where O’Malley is the Assistant Curator, include San Jose State University’s annual Master of Fine Arts Graduate show and This Show Needs You, a socially engaged exhibition held in conjunction with the conference Intervene! Interject! Rethinking Art as Social Practice at UC Santa Cruz. She holds a BA in Urban Studies from Stanford University and an MFA from California College of the Arts.
